She-Hulk Trailer Breakdown

Yesterday we were treated to the first teaser trailer for the upcoming Disney+ Marvel Studios’ show - She-Hulk: Attorney at Law! ICYMI, as we write here on the internet, why not watch the teaser before we dive in?

Of course if you wanted the fullest breakdown of Jennifer Walters story (a.k.a. She-Hulk), we are always going to recommend listening to our full Geek History Lesson episode where we teach you everything you need to know about the Single Green Female.

TL;DR Jennifer Walters (played by Tatiana Maslany in the show), is Bruce Banner’s cousin. She’s a practicing attorney. She has Hulk-esque powers.

Per the Official Synopsis:

follows Jennifer Walters as she navigates the complicated life of a single, 30-something attorney who also happens to be a green 6-foot-7-inch superpowered hulk

The last thing Professors Ashley and Jason watching Maslany is was Perry Mason which is set against the backdrop of early 20th century Los Angeles. In a fun parallel, the She-Hulk: Attorney at Law trailer also begins in the City of Angels with a skyline we recognized right out of the gate. Like many of the preceding Marvel Studios’ Disney+ shows the Marvel Cinematic Universe is being expanded beyond New York City - a.k.a. The center of the Marvel Comic Book Universe.

“Who’s gonna protect the world if not people like you?”

Asks Mark Ruffalo’s voice - an early confirmation of Bruce Banner’s appearance in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law and a nod to their close familial relationship.

As a member of the Superhero Law Division, Walters works for Goodman, Lieber, Kurtzberg & Holliway and one of the first recognizable associations is Tim Roth’s Emil Blonsky a.k.a. The Abomination. Shout out to everyone who has been holding out to see him again since 2008 when The Incredible Hulk was the latest and greatest addition to the MCU as it stood at the time or anyone who recognized him when he cameoed in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings!

Like Walters’ comic book origin, the synopsis also alludes to She-Hulk emerging following a blood transfusion from her Avengers cousin. Could this be what the car crash seen earlier was all about?

From the point of her transformation forward Banner takes on a mentor role explaining to his cousin the correlation between anger and her incredible new powers, while counseling a more level-headed approach to life than someone in such a “stressful” position may be able to easily achieve.

From this trailer, Walters begins fairly reserved. She reminds us of Trish in Jessica Jones. Trying to do her job, contribute to the world, and keep her private life private. However, viewers are treated to a badass show of She-Hulk’s power and - it appears - soon is the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Walters identity going public in a smashing way! In the comics, She-Hulk very quickly found herself over-sexualized and She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, the show, appears to be embracing this as an upping of the protagonist’s confidence. She-Hulk is big, and beautiful, and famous less than halfway through the trailer.

Several times throughout the trailer we see a group of villains armed with tools - notably, a crowbar. For years we have been hearing that the Wrecking Crew would show up in the MCU and this icon appearing repeatedly throughout the trailer seems to finally be confirming just that! In the comic books the Wrecking Crew (check out the ORIGINAL Secret Wars if you want a great feature for the Wrecking Crew!), often have magical ties, but in a “magic is just science we don’t understand yet” MCU our bet is they’re just an organized group of baddies.

Next up on the Marvel Comics Easter Egg list is Titania (played by The Good Place and Legendary star, Jameela Jamil), who has big hair and an even bigger personality. In our opinion she looks very much like Felicia Hardy a.k.a. Black Cat when we first meet her in this trailer - and that’s not a bad thing! Likely in preparation for She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, Marvel Comics released a recent series called Gamma Flight that’s a really good showing for Titania if you aren’t super familiar with who she is and what she’s all about. The brief glimpse we get of Titania’s fight with She-Hulk looks awesome and we’re expecting her to show up more than once over the course of the season.

Alongside Titania Frog-Man also appears in the She-Hulk: Attorney at Law trailer and appears to be an amalgamation of his two comic book universe personas. There’s not much to recommend as far as reading if you want to learn more about Eugene Patilio (a.k.a. Frog-Man), she we’re going to go with Spider-Man: New York Stories in case you really like what the suit looked like in this trailer.

At the end of the teaser trailer we see Walters carrying in a beau in a shot which has blown Twitter up as “the horniest MCU moment” … which feels like a bit of a stretch and not the reaction a male character would get. However, She-Hulk’s most famous line isn’t called Single Green Female for nothing. Frankly, we find it refreshing that she may have conquests equal to those we’ve seen other MCU heroes like Matt Murdock enjoy. We both know Los Angeles is a rough dating pool and it’s nice to see Jennifer Walters is kicking ass and taking names in her personal and professional lives!
