Last week the Betty White Challenge took off and raised money for animals in need all over the world. According to Variety the total donated in honour of the recently departed Golden Girl was $12.7 million. In honour of Betty White’s spirit for rescuing animals we wanted to take this week’s Geek History Lesson Blog Post to write about an important part of the Mind University Staff:
#InternBrego
He has been an integral part of Geek History Lesson and our lives for almost four years. A couple years ago we recorded a full length episode of Jason & Ashley’s Excellent Adventures telling Intern Brego’s Origin Story be sure to listen for all the nitty gritty details. TL;DR he came to us via Care Rescue LA. If you missed donating as part of the #BettyWhiteChallenge they are a wonderful organization you can donate to all year long!
Most days it feels like #InternBrego has been a staple of JAWIIN HQ for as long as their has been an HQ. It’s tough to believe sometimes the Patreon has been in existence longer than the silent participant in each and every show. For those who have been asking, “Where is #InternBrego’s Instagram account.” we’re doing a little experiment. Want to see Brego with a dedicated feed? Head over to the Geek History Lesson Official Instagram and comment YES on our latest post.

there will soon be a dedicated feed that is SAME CAT CONTENT, ALL CAT TIME.
Brego loves a good sunbeam and he loves comic books, like any self-respecting member of the Mind University, and even had some thoughts on an iconic Green Lantern storyline during our #BlackestNightClub period! He’s also a big fan of Neil Gaiman, as you can see below!
Readers who are staunch Lord of the Rings fans will recognize the etymology immediately.
For over a decade Ashley had sworn her first pet was going to be named “Brego” and when the opportunity presented itself we took the opportunity. In the books and the film Brego has been through a lot by the time he comes into contact with Aragorn. By the time Brego got to us he was abandonned in a box, separated from his mother, and removed from a kill shelter.
Like many sweet baby angels, he was a foster fail. We took him in on a whim (Jason answered a call put out in a Tweet), and adopted on impuse (“His name is Brego and we’re not giving him back.” ~*~more or less~*~), before he joined the podcast team. We found very quickly when we would do our bulk recording days …
SIDEBAR
… if you’re not familiar with this from the numerous times we’ve alluded to it on the podcast, we record 4 - 6 episodes of Geek History Lesson once or twice a month. It helps us keep on schedule!
… when we would do our bulk recording days Brego would sit in the office and lounge around or scramble over the table with all our equipment on it when we took breaks to stretch or get more coffee.
Our suspicion is he likes to hear us talk. Since the pandemic kicked up he’ll sit close to the computer, particularly if someone has to be on Zoom calls all day, so he can hear the sound of our voices. As the first draft of this blog post is being composed he’s sitting curled up just at the end of the couch observing all the ghosties who are flying around the ceiling of our home. He’s our unsuspecting editor. Overseeing so much of what comes and goes through the Mind University’s online presence.
Since 2020 Brego’s emotional intelligence has really come to bear. In the swirling vortex of emotions there are very few things as healing in this world as putting your face in a cat’s soft fur. If you’ve never tried it this might not make sense, but just that little bit of contact can make whatever is going wrong in your day melt away. There’s something so healing about giving all your feelings to a little creature who lives in your home to have them demand nothing in return except being fed 30 minutes before his scheduled feeding time.
#InternBrego has been a fur baby, a therapist, a voice of Geek History Lesson, a meme, and in the future an Instagram account? The same way he’s become the secret sauce in our lives he’s the secret sauce of the Mind University, but more as a silent partner!
In honour of #InternBrego, we’d like to redirect your attention to Care Rescue LA whether you have some cash you want to throw their way or are looking for an Intern for your podcast we can’t give them a higher recommendation.
